Definitely not for beginners, and I wish that he would state the colour he is using instead of us having to colour match. My first painting looks terrible but I am looking forward to seeing (hopefully) progress as we go through the course...

Ethan does a good job of helping you understand how to sketch out your drawings, and gives a bit of explanation of how you can emphasize and make paintings more "delicious" looking than in real life. As you paint each subject, the reference photos are not visible on the screen for the student, but they are given as a PDF. After doing three paintings with Ethan, I am realizing that it is really important for me to also be able to see the reference drawing, or I paint over highlights that need to be left white. I would realize the need to avoid these areas if I had the reference photo to see myself. There are times when the student is expected to have an understanding how how things should look at times, or how to actually go about painting texture. Instead of giving an explanation of what he's doing, you need to watch him, see the finish product, and then try to replicate what he does. It would be helpful to watch him paint first, and then go back and paint with him, also having the reference photo visible. Even if your paintings are not turning out exceptional, keep painting. I do feel like I am learning, and as I continue, I can see how I am improving, even if my finial picture is not as amazing looking as Ethan's. If you are an absolute beginning painter/drawer, this course might be a little frustrating to follow. If you have some experience drawing and painting with watercolor, it will help you in your journey. Do realize that you will paint many more subjects than you see in the introductory photo. There are a lot of little paintings that you do, more than just the 6 pieces of food on one page (tomato, artichoke, egg, etc.). Overall, I would say that if you can be patient to watch and then paint, and expect to grow, even while making mistakes, this could be a great course for you.
