Step 1
Start by preheating your oven to 180°C (350°F). In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and baking powder. Mix them well to ensure there are no lumps in your dry ingredients.
Next, add the sour cream, softened unsalted butter, and eggs to the dry mixture. Use a hand mixer or whisk to blend everything until smooth. The batter should be thick but pourable, so feel free to adjust with a little water or milk if necessary.
Step 2
To create a chocolate layer, take a portion of the prepared batter and incorporate the cocoa powder into it. Mix until the cocoa is evenly distributed. If you want a richer flavor, feel free to add more cocoa or replace part of the flour with cocoa.
If using, toss in some chopped chocolate nuts for texture and flavor.
Step 3
Prepare your baking pan by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper. Pour the white batter into the pan until it is filled halfway. Then, add the chocolate batter gently on top.
Place the cake in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 50 minutes. It’s done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Keep an eye on it towards the end of baking to avoid overcooking.
Step 4
Once the cake is baked, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes. After, carefully transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
