Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the Apple Filling

Begin by melting approximately 20 grams (0.7 ounces) of butter in a frying pan over medium heat.

Add the chopped apples, 70 grams (1/3 cup) of sugar, cinnamon, and either raisins or dried apricots. Cook until the apples become soft and tender.

Finally, stir in the chopped walnuts and remove from heat.

Step 2

Assemble the Strudel

On a clean surface, place one sheet of phyllo dough and brush it generously with melted butter.

Layer another sheet on top, brush with butter again, and repeat this for all sheets to create a stack.

Once stacked, place the apple filling along one edge of the phyllo stack, shaping it into a log. Carefully roll the dough up, tucking in the sides so the filling doesn’t spill out. Brush the entire rolled strudel with the remaining melted butter.

Step 3

Bake the Strudel

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit).

Place the strudel on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake for about 25 minutes or until it is golden brown.

Step 4

Serve and Enjoy

Once baked, remove the strudel from the oven and allow it to cool slightly.

Sift powdered sugar on top for decoration before serving. Note that if you prefer, almond slices can be used instead of powdered sugar for a different taste.

This strudel is best enjoyed warm and can be devoured in one tea session, so consider making a double batch for family and friends!

Servings

Once your Lazy Strudel is out of the oven and cooled slightly, it's time to serve!  ✨ This dish is fantastic on its own, but consider pairing it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful contrast of warm and cold. Whipped cream is another excellent topping that adds a lovely creaminess to each bite. 🍦💖

For a special touch, sprinkle some chopped nuts on top or garnish with fresh mint leaves to add a splash of color. 🍃 You could even try a drizzle of caramel sauce or a dusting of powdered sugar for a sweet finish. Imagine serving this strudel at your next gathering! Your friends and family won't be able to resist going back for seconds!

And if you love a good tea time treat, slice the strudel into smaller pieces and serve it along with some herbal tea or coffee. ☕  It’s the perfect addition to any afternoon snack!

Faq

  • What is the best way to store leftover strudel?

Store leftover strudel in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer shelf life, you can freeze slices, wrapping them tightly in plastic wrap.

  • Can I use other fruits instead of apples?

Absolutely! Pears, cherries, or even blueberries work wonderfully in this recipe. Just keep the sweetness level in mind when adjusting sugar.

  • What's the ideal temperature for the oven when baking strudel?

The best temperature is 200°C (about 400°F). This ensures the pastry becomes wonderfully crispy while the filling cooks perfectly.

  • Can I prepare the strudel in advance?

Yes! You can prepare the strudel, wrap it tightly, and refrigerate it for a few hours before baking. Just remember to add a few extra minutes to the baking time if it's cold from the fridge!

  • How can I make my strudel filling more flavorful?

Try adding a splash of lemon juice or vanilla extract to your filling for an aromatic boost. A pinch of nutmeg also complements the cinnamon beautifully!

  • Is it necessary to use phyllo dough, or can I use puff pastry instead?

You can use puff pastry for a different texture, but the baking time may need adjusting. Puff pastry takes a bit longer to cook through and achieve a golden color.
