In the world of kitchen appliances, there are always industry leaders - companies that not only ensure flawless functionality but also deliver incredible aesthetic appeal. Think Chanel handbags, Mercedes-Benz cars, or Pierre Hermé pastries. These brands have created iconic products that competitors try to emulate, consumers passionately desire, and journalists love to write about. It's a world beyond mere prestige; it's a lifestyle where you demand maximum quality, aesthetics, and reliability.

When you hear "KitchenAid," what's the first thing that comes to mind? I'm willing to bet that for 80% of readers, it's their iconic stand mixer.

That robust, professional-grade tool with its large bowl, often spotted in red, has become a staple in many kitchens. If you're passionate about cooking, you've likely seen this mixer (in various colors) in food blogs, recipe videos, books, and magazines.

It's no exaggeration to say that KitchenAid is the Mercedes-Benz of the kitchen: reliable mechanisms, hand-assembled in their Ohio factory, boasting impressive characteristics that elevate the appliances to professional or semi-professional status.

But today, we're not here to talk about their famous stand mixer. Instead, we're focusing on a more compact yet equally impressive tool: the KitchenAid hand mixer. Can it live up to the brand's reputation? Let's find out.

First Impressions: Unboxing and Design

The KitchenAid hand mixer arrived in an attractive box that immediately sets the tone for a premium product. One detail that caught my eye was the large color sticker on the front, indicating the mixer's shade. Unlike many manufacturers who tuck away a tiny color indicator, KitchenAid proudly displays it front and center. It's clear that even the color is considered an important feature - we're playing in the big leagues here, after all.

Upon lifting the box, I was pleasantly surprised by its weight. It was a bit heavier than expected, instilling confidence in the quality of the product inside. Opening the box revealed neatly arranged attachments, the mixer itself, and a storage bag. An instruction manual and warranty booklet were tucked away at the bottom.

What struck me was the individual sealed packaging for each set of attachments. This attention to detail suggests a commitment to hygiene - you can literally unbox and use it immediately without any concerns.

The mixer itself is a sight to behold. Its design straddles the line between retro charm and futuristic appeal. The KitchenAid designers have struck a perfect balance, accentuated by well-chosen colors, sleek lines, and quality materials. Remember when I mentioned that KitchenAid appliances are little works of art? Now you see what I mean. This isn't a mixer you'll want to hide away in a drawer - it's one you'll proudly display, marking its status and your own victory in choosing the best among the rest.

The color options are impressive, with some models offering up to two dozen choices. We're not talking about boring "black" or "white" here, but enticing shades like "Ice Blue" and "Green Apple." If Coco Chanel had ventured into kitchen appliances, I'm convinced she would have created something with this level of style and sophistication.

In terms of build quality, the mixer feels substantial in hand. The engineers at KitchenAid use the maximum possible amount of metal parts in their mixer mechanisms, and it shows. For those of us passionate about cooking, this dedication to durability is crucial. After all, who wants to deal with a broken plastic gear in the middle of preparing a delicate meringue?

Overall, the first impression is one of quality, style, and thoughtful design. It's clear that KitchenAid has put considerable effort into making sure that their hand mixer lives up to the brand's stellar reputation right from the moment you lay eyes on it.

Technical Specifications and Features

The KitchenAid hand mixer boasts an impressive array of features that set it apart from standard mixers. Let's dive into the specifics:

Speed Settings:
This mixer comes with 9 speed settings. While this might seem excessive at first glance, trust me, it's a game-changer. As you advance in your baking journey and start distinguishing between a crème and a crémeux, or a mousse and a meringue, you'll appreciate the precise control. The speed of mixing is crucial when working with egg whites, hot syrups, or agar-based mixtures. This range of speeds allows the mixer to handle a wide variety of tasks with finesse.

Power:
The mixer operates at 85 watts. Now, this might raise eyebrows if you're used to seeing mixers boasting 250-350 watts. Here's the catch - KitchenAid is quoting the "honest" power, the consistent output the mixer can maintain for 5 or even 10 minutes continuously. Many competitors list peak power, which the device can only sustain for a second or two. In practice, I found that at speed 8, this KitchenAid outperformed my old 450-watt Bosch mixer at its highest setting.

Weight and Dimensions:
Weighing in at just under 900 grams (about 2 pounds), with dimensions of 25×21×11 cm (H×W×D), this mixer strikes a balance between substantial feel and manageable size. It's hefty enough to feel stable during use, yet light enough for comfortable handling during extended mixing sessions.

Ventilation System:
KitchenAid has implemented a through-ventilation system with grilles at both the front and back of the mixer. This design allows for superior cooling during operation, enabling longer continuous use without overheating. In a 10-minute test, the mixer didn't heat up noticeably - a significant improvement over my previous experiences with other brands.

Control Panel: The control panel features rubberized buttons for comfortable operation. The speed control and power button are separate, enhancing safety by preventing accidental starts. The speed indicator is illuminated, with each speed increment adding a lit segment, providing both visual and tactile feedback.

Cord Management:
The mixer includes thoughtful details like a swivel cord that can be locked to either side, keeping it out of your way while working. There's also a rubberized strap for neatly securing the cord during storage or transport.

Attachments: The mixer comes with an impressive set of accessories:

  • Stainless steel Turbo Beaters (2 pcs)
  • Stainless steel dough hooks (2 pcs)
  • 16-wire stainless steel whisk
  • Liquid blender rod

Each attachment is designed for specific tasks, from kneading dough to whipping cream, ensuring you have the right tool for every mixing job.

These specifications and features showcase KitchenAid's commitment to creating a versatile, powerful, and user-friendly hand mixer that can handle a wide range of baking and cooking tasks with ease.

Performance and User Experience

After admiring the design and noting the impressive specifications, it was time to put the KitchenAid hand mixer through its paces. I tested it with various recipes and mixing tasks to get a comprehensive feel for its performance.

Mixing Performance

The KitchenAid hand mixer truly shines when it comes to its primary function - mixing. The 9-speed settings prove their worth here. At low speeds, it gently folds ingredients without incorporating unwanted air. At high speeds, it whips up perfectly fluffy meringues and creamy frostings. The transition between speeds is smooth, allowing for precise control over your mixing.

I was particularly impressed with how it handled heavy doughs. Using the dough hooks on speed 2-3, it effortlessly mixed pizza and bread doughs without straining. This is where the mixer's robust build and steady power output really come into play.

Whipping Cream and Egg Whites

The 16-wire whisk attachment is a standout feature. It whipped cream to soft peaks in record time, and the result was noticeably fluffier than what I've achieved with standard beaters. For meringues, it produced stable, glossy peaks with ease.

Noise Levels

One pleasant surprise was how quiet the mixer is, especially compared to my previous models. Even at high speeds, the noise level remained reasonable, making it less of a disruption in the kitchen.

Comfort During Use

The ergonomic design of the mixer really shines during extended use. The rubberized handle provides a secure grip, even with wet hands. The conical shape of the handle fits naturally in the palm, reducing hand fatigue during longer mixing sessions.

Splatter Control

I appreciated the mixer's design which allows it to stand with the beaters angled slightly upward. This small detail makes a big difference in reducing drips and splatters when you set the mixer down between mixing stages.

Attachments

The variety and quality of the attachments expand the mixer's versatility significantly. The liquid blender rod, in particular, is excellent for making sauces and dressings in smaller quantities. Each attachment feels sturdy and well-made, inspiring confidence in their longevity.

Clean-up and Storage

Post-baking clean-up is a breeze. The smooth surfaces of the mixer body wipe clean easily, and the attachments are dishwasher safe. The included storage bag is a thoughtful addition. It comfortably fits all attachments, keeping them organized and easy to access. This, combined with the cord management system, makes storing and transporting the mixer a hassle-free experience.

Overall Impression

The KitchenAid hand mixer delivers exceptional performance across a wide range of tasks. Its thoughtful design elements enhance the user experience, making it a joy to use for everything from quick weeknight baking to more ambitious culinary projects. The attention to detail in both function and form truly sets it apart from standard hand mixers.

I was debating going with the KitchenAid Stand Mixer. Always wanted one but never thought it was worth the cost (for me - not big on cooking/baking). My hand mixer was wearing out and a friend suggested I try the KitchenAid hand mixer since it’s just me, but I do often cook for guests or to take dishes/desserts when eating with family or friends. The quality and power of this mixer is excellent! I have always used less expensive products. This one is well worth it in every respect! Looks really nice too.

I love me some kitchen aid and this little hand mixer definitely does the job. I like the variable speeds, and I LOVE (as per Kitchen Aid awesomeness) the color. This one is unique in that it has a feature that locks the direction of the cord where it attaches to the machine, depending on either your orientation to the plug, or to accommodate right and left handed. Neat! My main gripe is that there isn't a caddy for storage. But I solved that by just storing it in the box it came in, so no biggie. ^_^

I have had my purple Kitchen Aid hand mixer for many years. They last and last. I went through several before purchasing a Kitchen Aid. I purchased this one for my daughter. It is lighter in weight; and the whisks are not interchangeable with the older Kitchen Aid models. A good mixer, just not quite as well made as the older ones.

Needing to replace a dying Kitchen Aid, I thought I'd 'upgrade' and bought a 9 speed Braun. I returned it because I found it hard to control, and because it flung dough all over the counter and floor. I decided go to with a KitchenAid again, which after all had lasted me over 20 years. I'm very satisfied. The grip is comfortable on my arthritic hand, and the mixer has plenty power without being hard to control. As my old one did, I was able to integrate all the ingredients without having to stop and scrape the bowl a lot as I had to with the Braun. This mixer is about 1/2 oz. lighter than my old one at around 35 ounces. I like that the beaters don't have plastic or something that could eventually chip off (as a lot of newer mixers seem to have). My old beaters fit in the new machine, so that's kind of nice. I have arthritis in my hands, and it was easy to turn the mixer on and off, and adjust the speed. You can lock the cord right or left to keep it out of your way, and it's a good sturdy cord. It makes a little noise, but it's not raucous, and there is some vibration, but not so much you have to struggle to control the mixer. I ordered a white one, with delivery promised in about a month since it's not a popular color. I got it in less than 10 days. Good product, good fulfillment. I'm very satisfied with this mixer and the transaction.

Best hand mixer I’ve bought

After buying a couple mixers to replace a 50 year old Oster, and returning them, I decided to spend a little more for a good brand name. The others were cheap junk. This mixer is the best! The first speed is nice and slow and doesn’t throw the mix all over the place like the cheaper brands. It’s quiet, many speeds, does a great job. A little heavier which keeps it from bouncing all over the bowl. It is worth the money. I was lucky and got on a good sale. The beaters are stainless steel and won’t rust after a couple uses. You won’t regret this purchase, it is the best.

Mixer with low speed, and very study construction.
Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2024
I love my new KitchenAide handheld mixer. It has a very low speed setting which is useful for stirring batters at first and preventing spatters from flying all over countertops and one's self. The motor is strong enough to handle stiff batters easily. However, I still use my KitchenAide stand mixer for really thick batter, or dough, because at age 78.5 years I do not have the strength, or stamina, for holding on to the mixer and the bowl while mixing really stiff doughs, or batters. I learned this mixing stiff Oatmeal Cookie Dough with this new KitchenAide Hand Mixer. So, I highly recommend this mixer for it's lightweight, it's low speed option, the extra attachment, and the zippy red color.

I finally got rid of a cheap model after years of subpar use. I have a KitchenAid stand mixer in the same color, and this little guy sure is snazzy. Highly-rated by Consumer Reports (only the very pricey Breville rates higher). It's fun to play with the electronic buttons. My only complaint might be that the highest speed doesn't appear to be as fast as my old one. Still seems to do the job, though. The whisk attachment for small jobs is a nice touch.
